plan and implement strategies, using health resources, to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing
To discover what GameAware does and understand their “gamers helping gamers” approach to building healthy relationships with gaming
Let’s be honest, a course about healthy gaming is not an easy thing to write for students who might be gamers.
Naturally, it takes one to know one. I can tell you that I come from over 30 years experience, including competing in esports leagues at the dawn of the scene.
Between my traditional sports and esports backgrounds, I’ve begun working with professional esports players as a performance coach.
The rest of my experience is with 15 years of teaching Health, PE and Wellbeing. I hope this helps you understand that I am bringing a very holistic perspective into this content, and the most important perspective here is the gamer’s.
One purpose of this unit is to help improve the conversation between gamers and non gamers because of the massive knowledge gap between them. For example, having the right language to explain your passion for gaming to your parents is essential to help them see what you see.
Parents will also have access to their course, so that they can see the bigger picture and understand that there’s more to gaming than being “fun”.
We have to acknowledge that people do struggle with gaming, while others don’t. It’s complicated.
Our mission is to bridge the knowledge gap between gamers, parents, schools and mental health professionals so that we can minimize the harms and maximize the benefits that we see in the gaming community.
By the end of this unit, you’ll learn about your own relationship with gaming, what job it does for you, and how to min/max your experience so that we can feel more fulfillment in-game and in real life.
We can also support your school community by helping to leverage the benefits of gaming through school gaming clubs and esports teams, which is another great way to get everyone on the same page if your school is ready for that step.
I hope you enjoy the content – Let’s get stuck in.
